Sassinak escaped from slavery to freedom, and then used that freedom to fight the evil that had wrecked her world, first as a cadet, later as a captain, and finally as an Admiral of the Fleet. Lunzie, one of the galaxy's greatest healers, is Sassinak's great grandmother--but in actual years she is her junior; Lunzie spent nearly a century in coldsleep waiting for rescue when her ship was destroyed. Imagine their mutual surprise when Sassinak rescued her. How together Sassinak and Lunzie save first a world, and then a confederation of worlds--and almost in passing establish amity between the genetically engineered Heavy Worlders and normal reality--is the story of The Planet Pirates. - Baen  - Highly Recommended

A story well told.  Highly Recommended.

The Ethics of Star Trek by Judy Barad Ph.D., Ed Robertson
Hardcover - 208 pages 1 Ed edition (December 5, 2000) Harpercollins; ISBN: 0060195304
"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one...except when they don't". For my money, the best thing Trek ever did for ethics was when Shatner delivered his get a life speech on Saturday Night Live. I may have to read this to see if they have a clue.

The Last Hot Time by John M. Ford
Hardcover - 224 pages 1 Ed edition (December 2000) Tor Books; ISBN: 0312855451 - John Ford’s The Last Hot Time is a tremendous piece of contemporary fantasy. It combines the Chicago of Elliott Ness and Bugsy Malone with a future where Elves, or Ellyll as they call themselves, have returned to the world and the works of man put aside, more or less. Full Review: The Last Hot Time

The third Mars expedition has high hopes. With luck they might live to return to Earth, a trick Mars One and Two didn't manage. When their return rocket fails though, it's off across the Marscape we go, by MarsRover, MarsBike, MarsPlane, MarsSki and MarsBoot. At the Martian North Pole,  across a few thousand miles of frozen dusty wasteland and a few canyons big enough to swallow the Grand Canyon is the abandoned return ship of the first Mars expedition. Recommended. Candle by John Barnes - Mass Market Paperback - 256 pages (December 2000) Tor Books; ISBN: 0812589688
After an AI spreads a virus throughout humanity's brains, making them happy if a bit dull, a Cowboy hunter is brought out of retirement to track down the last free man. Heinleinesque to the max, and not a bad story.

Cleopatra's Needle by Steven Siebert - Mass Market Paperback - 432 pages (December 2000) Tor Books; ISBN: 0812570715

Dragon Weather by Lawrence Watt-Evans - Mass Market Paperback - 560 pages (December 2000) Tor Books; ISBN: 0812589556

Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card - Mass Market Paperback - 480 pages (December 2000) Tor Books; ISBN: 0812575717
- Ender's shadow is a "parallel" book to Card's magnum opus Ender's Game. It takes place in roughly the same time frame as EG, but follows "Bean", the boy who becomes Ender's lieutenant and though he may live in Ender's shadow, the book makes him a character every bit as compelling.
