Zombies, Vampires, Werewolves and a "Nike" shod Necromancer.  Buffy eat your heart out!

Bloody Bones is the fifth in Laurell K. Hamilton's series of ten Anita Blake Vampire Hunter novels but jumping in mid-series doesn't prove to be a problem.

Our heroine Anita is a cheeky, smart, sexy and tough but somehow vulnerable character that you can't help liking. She slays vampires though only with a death warrant (Hang on! Aren't they dead already?) and raises three hundred year old zombies for a living.  She can't seem to bring herself to kill her long suffering Master vampire boyfriend Jean-Claude.  Just to make it even more interesting she's been two-timing him with a Werewolf who teaches science at a junior high school, though she has yet to sleep with either of them.  How cute!

In this episode, Anita finds herself faced with the challenge of raising an entire burial ground of zombies for a private client that she doesn't trust. Not only that, the police have brought her in to help solve the murder of three boys who have been ripped apart in a way even she never thought possible. If that’s not enough, an ancient vampire that has a history of paedafilia has kidnapped another young boy. All of which makes Buffy look tame by comparison.

The matter of fact way in which Hamilton lays down the plot makes us cautious at first but rapidly pulls the reader into this world of twilight, holy water, ghouls, monsters - indeed anything you can think of that could come back from the dead -all of which make Anita's life colorful to say the least.

The story is exciting and full of sexy, scary, well dressed characters, some of whom I wouldn't mind an hour with in the bedroom myself, vampire or not!  Not too deep or taxing with fast moving action - just the ticket for this enjoyable read.

Being female probably makes this novel easier to swallow, but there’s enough blood, gore and tension to keep any open minded reader captive. I will certainly be dipping into the world of Anita Blake again.  Even if it is just to see if she finally sleeps with the Werewolf!
