Canadian Report - September 2001
by Asta Sinusas

Hobbit-like The Serpent's Egg  (Saratime/ 0968871305/ $29.95C) is no competition for Harry Potter, but J. FitzGerald McCurdy may eventually give J.K. Rowling a run for her money. (stay tuned for a review next issue - Ern)

Also releasing this month is Virtual Freedom by Sean Kane (McArthur & Co./ 1552782425/ $24.95C), which was shortlisted for the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. I received the novel a bit too late to include it in this column, but if the rest of the book is as good as the first chapter, you'll be hearing about it next month.

Frequently, SF books by Canadian authors that are available in Canada but published by US houses, as in the case of the Tor reprint of End of an Era by Robert J. Sawyer.

On a side note, while in the Great White North this summer I picked up a CD called HouseMix 2001. It has one track that I can't stop playing called "Spaced Invader" by Hatiras feat. Slarta John. This track serves as a reminder that other cultures think aliens are out there, and they can come down as easily in Kansas as any where on the planet.

As always, if you have a publishing tidbit for me from the Great White North, please share it by emailing
