Nominees for the 81st Academy Awards - Winners Highlighted by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 23 February 2009 / ) -

Here's a list of all the Oscar nominations and the few winners with a Science Fiction or Fantasy pedigree, including Changeling, written by J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5.

As you can see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button had 13 Nominations and won only 2 minor Oscars. The Dark Knight did better with its 8 Nominations and 2 Oscars, the big one going posthumously to the late Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor as the Joker. Finally, Wall-E parlayed its 6 Nominations into 1 Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film, holding off Kung Fu Panda and Bolt.

Amazon Unveils Kindle 2 by Melissa J. Perenson, PC World (PC,, ZD 10 February 2009 / $359.00) -

Here at a New York City media event, Amazon launched its second-generation e-book reader, the Kindle 2. This much anticipated update to the Kindle is priced at $359 and sports a new svelte design, longer battery life, and an improved display. Amazon is taking pre-orders today with units scheduled to ship to customers starting February 24. Current Kindle owners who pre-order the Kindle 2 by February 10 will jump to the front of the waiting list, Amazon says.

It turns out the leaked info on the Kindle 2 was spot-on. The images correctly reflected the new Kindle's notably more svelte and contoured industrial design.
