BRAVO Work of Art winner of the Penguin Book Challenge sign books in LA at Vroman's Bookstore June 30 by (Penguin Press 24 June 2010 / ) - As part of the Penguin Books 75th Anniversary Celebration Artist John Parot, winner of "The Book Challenge", episode three of the new creative series on Bravo's Work of a Art: The Next Great Artist will make a guest appearance at Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena, California on June 30 at 7:00 pm.

John Parot won last night's cover challenge with an original new look for the Penguin Classic, The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. The book went on sale June 24 and costs $13. Parot will sign copies of his winning edition at the Vroman's event.

Book View Cafe to hold Moon and Sun Caption Contest, by ( 17 June 2010 / ) - In celebration of the ebook edition release of Vonda N. McIntyre's Nebula-winning novel, THE MOON AND THE SUN, BVC is hosting a Beaded Sea Creature caption contest. Beaded sea creatures are creations of McIntyre with designs based on hyperbolic and fractal surfaces. Sherzad, the sea monster, one of the main characters in THE MOON AND THE SUN, would be familiar with creatures very like these: Coral reefs, sea anemones, nudibranchs, marine flatworms. (more ...)

Now this popular author of over 30 books is the featured subject of Bluewater Productions' Female Force biography comic due in stores June 16th.

Patrick Lundrigan Wins 2010 Jim Baen Memorial Writing Contest by Laura Haywood-Cory (Baen 16 June 2010 / ) - Baen Books and National Space Society Team Promote Space-Based Science Fiction

Wake Forest, NC, May 11, 2010 Patrick Lundrigan, of Boonton, New Jersey, won the 2010 Jim Baen Memorial Writing Contest with a story titled "Space Hero." <> The Jim Baen Memorial Short Story Contest was designed to promote and reward forward thinking science fiction authors who write exciting and innovative stories about the near future of manned space exploration. Toni Weisskopf, publisher of Baen Books, said "I was also favorably impressed by the positive spirit toward space science and the future found in each story. Diana Wynne Jones abandons chemotherapy (with consultation) by ( 02 June 2010 / ) - Diana Wynne Jones, after much consultation with her husband and specialists, has decided to abandon chemotherapy (which is serving only to make her feel very ill indeed) and resign herself to whatever may follow. Her senior oncologist fears she has 'months rather than years', but we all hope that as once or twice before Diana can still surprise the medical profession. May the good luck return. [via CB]

Jeanne Robinson (1948 - 2010) by ( 01 June 2010 / ) - Jeanne Robinson, wife of author Spider Robinson, died May 30th, surrounded by family and loved ones. Her battle with biliary tract cancer had been written about on their blog. She was a dancer and with her husband co-authored Stardance a science fiction story that centered around a dance troop.

Telos wins Silver... by (Telos 01 June 2010 / ) - We're absolutely delighted to announce that Telos Publishing scooped the Silver Award in the Performing Arts category at ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Awards, announced at BookExpo America in New York last week. The winning title was Axelle Carolyn's It Lives Again!, an analysis of the modern horror film. (more ...)
