Subterraean Press has published another novella by Kelley Armstrong set in her Otherworld series, the previous novella was Angelic and featured Eve Levine. The current novella, Counterfeit Magic deals with Paige Winterbourne and Savannah Levine as they look into a supernatural fight club. Their client however seems to be more interested in Paige's husband, Lucas Cortez than she is in the death of her brother.
Paige and Savannah find themselves smack in the middle of something more than just a random killing of a heavy bettor in deep to a loan shark. There's real trouble brewing in the fight club scene. Then there's also something going wrong in Paige's personal life as Lucas is trying to adjust to being back into the Cortez business after the death of two of his brothers.
Jealousy. Insecurity. Betrayal. Which is the driving force? And who is behind it all? Will Paige and Savannah come up with a solution? Will it be one they can live with? Where will their priorities best be served?
Counterfeit Magic has almost as much plot and twists as you'd expect from a novel. For those who are following the characters from the novels, this novella supplies some insight into how the lives of Lucas, Paige, and Savannah are changing since Lucas had to step back into the family business. Do you need to read this to understand the next novel? Probably not. But, if you're a fan of Armstrong's series, you'll definitely want to pick up a copy of Counterfeit Magic and, while I read the advanced reader copy, it did have the interior artwork included – this would be a beautiful volume to add to your collection of her novels.
