This is a graphic novel set in the world of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series. There are currently 7 books in the series along with a non-fiction companion volume also done by Gabaldon. The story in the graphic novel takes place prior to or subsequent to the first book in the series, Outlander although it is told by a different character thus giving the work a different perspective. The novel opens with the arrival of Jamie Fraser to the shores of Scotland, there to be greeted by his uncle, Murtagh. The story then follows Jamie and Murtagh as they evade the British, meet Clair and then find themselves in a bit of a situation concerning who they actually should be loyal too in terms of clan. The story is richly illustrated by Hoang Nguyen, although I am not sure that fans of the series will be able to adjust to either the change in format or the change in character, although it will be interesting to see what kind of comments the book garners. Gabaldon has experience writing comics, having worked with Disney comics for quite a few years and she's been itching to do a graphic novel so that when the chance arose to do a graphic novel set in her own universe she jumped at it. This is certainly a beautiful book, nicely illustrated, well written and a fine addition to the Outlander universe. It will be interesting to see if Gabaldon pushed to continue a run of graphic novels in addition to the regular novels and what directions she might take with them. For fans of the series who love graphic novels this is a win/win. Those fans who are more traditionalist may have more of a struggle accepting the shortness of the story as well as the cartoonish nature of the renderings. On the plus side anyone with access to a bookstore will be able to see exactly what they are getting.
