Lilah Devereaux, an animal control officer, is summarily fired, finds her car stolen, and is drugged. Kidnapped, she wakes naked in a refrigerated truck handcuffed to a corpse. She fears GenHance, a mysterious biotech company, intends to use her for experiments on her DNA, dead or alive. The Takyn, children who had their genes manipulated, were then adopted throughout the world. They only gain their full powers after death and rebirth. Lilah is one of the Takyn. She met others via the Internet and hopes they can help her. The corpse, a former mercenary killed in Afghanistan, proves not to be dead. Together, they struggle to regain their strength, shake off the effects of drugs, and plot an escape. Meanwhile, the head of one faction of the Darkyn, a vampire, orders two of his agents to find and kill a rogue vampire who violated their laws. Also at work is the mysterious Collegia who help and protect Kyndred. However, one of their agents has also turned rogue. Multiple story lines and plenty of action keep the story moving with abundant intrigues and conspiracies to unravel. Hot romance develops between Lilah and Walker, the mercenary. Viehl also introduces a new group of changelings that differ from both the Darkyn and the Kyndred. The true nature of Lilah and Walker are revealed only at the end. Viehls's successful vampire series, Darkyn, ended after eight novels and she began the Kyndred series with Shadowlight followed by Dreamveil. The next Kyndred novel, Nightshine, is forthcoming. Viehl also writes science fiction and Christian romances under other pen names.
