Regular visitors to this site will know that Graham Joyce is amongst my very favourite writers and I have covered much of his work over the last few years - see here for reviews of Smoking Poppy, The Facts of Life and Limits of Enchantment, and here for Joyce's most recent book, Memoirs of a Master Forger, as written by William Heaney.

Now comes The Silent Land, a new Joyce novel published in hard cover by Gollancz, described as an "... errie and compelling exploration of love". Film rights were snapped up pre-publication by Focus Features. Recommended.

"A young couple are caught in an avalanche during a ski-ing holiday in the French Alps. They struggle back to the village and find it deserted. As the days go by they wait for rescue, then try to leave. But each time they find themselves back in the village. And, increasingly, they are plagued by visions and dreams and the realization that perhaps no-one could have survived the avalanche. THE SILENT LAND is a brooding and tender look at love and whether it can survive the greatest challenge we will ever face. "
