As he carries his injured communication officer Trick on his back while crossing the black desert on Ebbany, Interplanetary Militia Extreme Tactical Force First Active team Commander Bronce Chapel wonders what went wrong. He prays that the team (Lasher, Justice, and Enders) are okay and concludes somehow the Nomaads who ambushed them expected them. The entire unit makes it safely to the ship and travel to their home planet of Ulrike.
Bronce has suffered lately from strange dreams when a woman arrives at the gym without using a pad. Ravenna asks who he is and why he taunts her. She warns him to keep his team together before she disappears. Ravenna has been visiting his dreams for a month and wishes he would come soon to rescue her and her brother Kith from rogue Nomaads.
While in the hospital Trick hacks into Admiral JuJuren's file and shows it to Bronce. They were sold out by the Admiral. JuJuren signs the order for the team without Trick to return to Ebbany to rescue a kidnapped High King. Expecting betrayal, they hike off the expected path to the facility they are to raid that they know is a trap. Bronce falls into a hole and recalls Ravenna's warning so he tells the team to come to him. He kills some guards and opens a cell door where he sees the real Ravenna and her brother Kith who were held prisoner. Although he breaks procedure by taking civilians with them, he and the team leave with the siblings and head to The Chosen Ones Temple.
Known for her purebred romantic fantasies, Jacqueline Frank provides an exciting hybrid romantic science fiction fantasy. The story line is fast-paced and loaded with plenty of action although the plot is somewhat thin. Two of the three planet system comes across as different but viable while the middle orb, except in a limited way, is not a factor until the climax.
A key element to this Three Worlds novel is that the cast of the five member military unit and that of the extended Chosen Ones family are diverse as each has their own traits and flaws. In fact the Chosen Ones also possess unique paranormal skills. The lead couple is in love even before they meet as she visits him from a dungeon on her planet, Ebbany, to his planet, Ulrike, through her otherworldly power. They even kiss before they met in person.
The villain is under developed in comparison as his motives are never explained especially since he wants Bronce dead. Lacking that key element is a detractor from an otherwise enjoyable tour of the Frank Three Worlds system.
