In Bigfoot War by Eric S. Brown, the story unfolds through multiple viewpoints, though Jeff is undeniably the protagonist and the engine for much of the story's action. We witness the discovery Jeff and his brother Scott make--the brutal slaying of a deer--and the subsequent murder of his family. Fast-forwarding, we see Jeff acquired the skills to even the score many years later. We also meet some of Babble Creek's other residents, including Tom, a young man already looking back on his glory days with some bitterness, and Becca, the town's police dispatcher, who tries to coordinate a town-wide nightmare as war erupts all around Babble Creek.

By the end, there will be a reckoning between Jeff and his enemy, with some surprising twists and turns along the way.

Brown delivers a taut, well-told story, with the terse style perfectly suited to its fast-forward narrative. Jeff isn't a very chatty hero; he's back in town to do a job and finish some family business. Problem is, he's going to have to dig into the cause of the trouble--which will offer some new challenges as well.

Though brief, the story offers a lively "man against monster" story told from a fresh angle. Folks who enjoy this slice of contemporary horror will be well-served.
