Rachel Morgan is back from the ever-after. Her shunning has been lifted. Life is back to normal, except she's wearing an enchanted bracelet that negates her ability to tap a line and her status is threatened now that she's listed as a demon rather than a witch. But she's adjusting--well, trying to adjust--actually, she's just whining and moaning and second guessing everything she's done or thinking of doing. Meanwhile, Jenks and Ivy are moving on.

Rachel gets called in by Inderland Security (I.S.) when a witch is found mutated and killed in a public space. Horrified by what she sees, she also realizes that this is a transformation gone wrong. I.S. believes that they can blame this and the other deaths on Rachel if she doesn't help them find the culprits. In other words, Rachel is stuck squarely between a rock and a hard place.

The first useful clue to be found is that there are HAPA (Humans Against Paranormals Association) knots on the victim. This hate group was thought to be eradicated years ago. We learn, as does Rachel, that I.S. has known of their existence for quite a while and hidden that knowledge.

One things Rachel has always been good at is keeping the various groups satisfied, but never giving in to any of them. However, now she is essentially without power. She can't cast witch spells. She can't even use her blood to kindle the charms that she makes. She can only do demon magic, and her bracelet doesn't allow her to do that either.

A Perfect Blood pulls in a lot of the plot threads from the previous books and seems to complete one cycle of Rachel Morgan's life. Rachel is changed -- not just from witch to demon -- she's coming into her own. She comes to understand on many levels the phrase, "with great power comes great responsibility".

Throughout the series, the characters have been growing and changing and A Perfect Blood seems to pull a lot of the loose ends together, while highlighting how much has changed so far. It feels that Rachel and the other characters will never be the same as they were. Relationships, connections, and dependencies have all shifted -- after this nothing will be as it was -- life, or in this case fictional life -- moves on.

I can hardly wait to read what happens next in Cincinnati and the Hollows, and just what mess Rachel will find herself in next. Because even though the mutations were stopped, HAPA is still out there -- filled with hate for all paranormals. There's also a new group that has come on the scene and what part they have to play in the future is a mystery for now.
