Deadlocked, the 12th book in the Sookie Stackhouseseries, felt like it moved along at a slower paced. However, when the book was finished and I thought about all that had happened, I realized it wasn't any slower paced than the previous books, it seemed that way because Sookie stood like a still pool in the middle of the action -- not panicked, not desperate to survive, and not anxious. In Deadlocked, we've got a Sookie who has once again found her center.

A Touch of Dead

The vampires are still embroiled in politics. Felipe de Castro, King of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Nevada, is visiting to investigate what happened to Victor. The first upset is that when Sookie arrives, she finds Eric drinking from another woman. Later that same woman is found dead on his lawn. Now everyone needs to watch what they say and do because not only is Felipe de Castro out for vengeance but the police are now looking at Eric for the murder.

Dermont is still living with Sookie. He's also fixing up her attic as his suite. Claude is also staying there, but she hardly sees him as he's putting so many hours in at Hooligan's, his strip bar. The door to fairy has been closed except for a shrinking hole in the wood behind Sookie's house.

Then there's all the relationships between and among Sookie's friends. There's Sam's new werewolf woman friend, who Sookie is convinced hates her though she can't figure out why. Jason is settling down. Tara's pregnant with twins. Sookie stands outside it all feeling left out because things aren't going well with Eric.

The murder, and watching her friends carve out lives for themselves with the people they care for makes Sookie reevaluate her own life and the paths she's trod over the last several years. It's a very thoughtful and emotional book as Sookie comes to realize that maybe, just maybe, she needs to change where her life is headed. That realization also comes with the knowledge that along the way, she's grown more assured and confident.

What she does and how she reacts to circumstances may surprise some but other readers will feel like Sookie Stackhouse has come full circle and is now comfortable in her skin. Deadlocked may be misnamed because the book is all about change and growth.

Fans of the series will definitely enjoy this volume but whether they'll like the ending is another matter. If you have for some reason never read the Sookie Stackhouse novels, you'll want to begin with the first book, Dead Until Dark and experience the entire journey.
