During every month, Tor posts stories at www.tor.com, excerpts from novels, comics, and articles. They are free so I recommend you check them out. Each new story will be reviewed separately. This story was posted on April 25, 2012. The introduction to "Prophet" by Jennifer Bosworth tells us that it is her "first published short work and serves as a prequel to her debut novel Struck, out on May 8th from Farrar, Strauss & Giroux". Rance Ridley is the 13-year old son of Ram Ridley, the leader (and prophet) of a cult called the Church of the Light. When Ram catches his son committing the grave sin of kissing a girl he wants to shut him up in the cellar in the dark. The girl takes the blame and winds up in the cellar herself. When it starts raining heavily, Rance is worried that the cellar would flood and she would drown and goes to rescue her. I won't spoil the rest of this brief tale. We are told that Rance is the villain of Struck<.i> but there isn't much here. It's just a promo for a novel but doesn't make me want to read it.
