George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones is a big hit on HBO. This has spawned any number of add on and tag along entries, the latest being this cookbook, based on the series. Now, Martin admits that while food plays a role in his books he does not cook so this is not a book of recipes taken from the novels, rather a collection of recipes constructed from historical information, guesswork, and passion. So, if you ever wanted to recreate a dinner that would have been served on the Wall, or a lunch that might have been taken at Winterfall, or a breakfast served to the nobles at King's Landing then this is the book for you. Or, perhaps your penchant runs to deserts served across the Narrow Sea or in the South. Whatever your hankerings there is an entry here for you.

To begin the book the authors address the difference between a medieval kitchen and a modern day one, telling you how to make adaptations. They also have a beginning section on how to put together some of the basic ingredients you will need in order to tackle the actual dishes themselves, such as butter sauce and what might be a suitable replacement for pigeon or auroch. They also give you some modern equivalents so you get medieval honey biscuits as well as modern honey biscuits.

I have to admit that I have not tried to tackle any of the recipes in the book although quite a few look worth the effort, particularly the sweet dough and the honeyed chicken. Sure this is a stretch since we're talking about fictional food. On the other hand, some of the best food is fictional food. Besides cooking is all about experimentation, unlike baking which is more like science. So, if you are a fan of the series, or Martin, or just of cooking, this ones for you. Run out and get yourself an auroch and haver at it.
