Jessica McClain comes from a family of werewolves. Her father is a werewolf, the leader of the local pack. Her brothers are werewolves. As the daughter of a werewolf, she's not expected to actually change, but some believe that if she does it would signal the end of the werewolves worldwide -- it seems there is a prophecy. Because of the prophecy, Jessica left her family home and changed her name and made a life for herself. Until one night, she changed.
That single event will change her life forever. No longer does she have to worry about the next client, and will they have enough work to pay the bills, but can she stay ahead of the assassination attempts long enough to actually go back to work. Now that she's a werewolf, those who believe the prophecy think the only way to remain safe is to kill her.
This is a world where werewolves and other supernatural creatures exist, but the world of everyday people believes that such creatures are fictional. Jessica's father wants to protect her and if that means locking her up and hiding her from the world and everyone in it to do so, well, he's okay with that. So, who should she trust.
Carlson does a great job of taking wolf characteristics and melding them with werewolf lore to make the pack structure and the power structure believable. Jessica is confused, awed by the changes, psyched by her new abilities, and determined to remain independent and alive. The story is fast paced as Jessica tries to stay one step ahead of the many hit squads out for her blood.
The writing is crisp although I found some of the situations that Jessica gets herself into a bit far-fetched for someone who actually had experience and background in werewolf culture. However, once I let go and just decided to go for the ride, it didn't bother me and the book became a real page-turner.
It's entertaining but you do need to just go with it for the fun and adventure.
