Isolde (Izzy) Brannick fights monsters. The entire Brannick clan has fought vampire, weres, witches, fae, and others for generations. However, for now, the compound that used to house hundreds of Brannicks is home to only Izzy and her mother-- and the evil wizard imprisoned in a mirror in their back bedroom.

Izzy's sister, Finley, disappeared on what should have been an easy case when Finley told Izzy to stay in the car and study. Finley never came back and Izzy has felt guilty and insecure ever since. On her first solo assignment, Izzy is over-powered and if her mother hadn't come to her rescue she'd be dead.

So, when Izzy's mother decides they have to investigate a haunting at Mary Evans High School, where Izzy will be enrolled as a regular student. Izzy knows it's because she failed again. Afterall, ghosts are no big deal and this job shouldn't take more than an day -- tops.

Not knowing what to expect as a high school student, since she's always been home schooled, Izzy is totally unprepared for high school. There's the cliques: the jocks, the nerds, the losers, the bullies, and just about every other cliché group she'd heard of. Her first day doesn't go very well, but she meets a couple of interesting students who don't seem to mind her unconventional ways.

It doesn't take long before Izzy realizes something more than a haunting is going on at Mary Evans High. However, she's beginning to like being part of a group and having friends. To her surprise, her mother seems to also be fitting in and enjoying cooking meals, working a job, and just being a normal mother .

Izzy is seeing view of life that doesn't involve fighting monsters and she's beginning to see that things could be different. But then who would fight the monsters and allow people to have a safe existence? There's a lot going on below the surface plot of School Spirits that makes it stand a bit above the usual teenage supernatural crime fighter story.
