Every month, Tor posts stories as well as excerpts from novels, comics and articles. They are free so I recommend you check them out. Each new story will be reviewed separately. This was posted on August 21, 2013.

"Work Sets You Free" by Davis Barnett -+- The introduction tells us that this features the protagonist of the forthcoming novel Gideon Smith and the Mechanical Girl (Tor Books [US] and Snowbooks [UK], September 2013).

Gideon Smith has set out for London in an alternate 1890. He is in search of a hero to fight monsters that only he seems to know about in his home town. He is looking for Captain Lucian Trigger, the Hero of the Empire, whose globe-spanning adventures were recounted every week in Gideon's favourite story paper, World Marvels & Wonders. Along the way, he is sidetracked and winds up doing forced labor for an order of nuns, The Impoverished Sisterhood of the Stony Resurrection, who run a mine!

Pretty amusing. The novel might be good.
