Skyler and his team are in a frantic search for the remaining keys left by the builders. While the search goes on, Skyler finds more than just relics in a huge artifact in Africa, perhaps the original artifact that started everything. While this is interesting it does not provide any respite to the fact that the builders are returning one last and final time. What they want is anyone's guess but some believe that controlling all the relics is a key.
While petty greed and avarice rule the ravaged planet, Skyler and the group he's now with struggle to save everything.
This is the third book in the Dire Earth Cycle and it's quite the conclusion. The cycle, three books, published in three consecutive months, from new author Jason M. Hough, is an epic adventure of SF. Hough has done an excellent job of building this world and then populating it with interesting characters. And the world, or universe, is complex, believable, and fascinating in it's despair and puzzles. Hough does an excellent job not only keeping it all together but keeping it all moving forward at a fairly rapid pace.
I enjoyed this book and the entire series. It was better than I expected and delivered more than I anticipated. I liked the characters and the world that Hough created. It was engaging and hard to put down. The idea of being visited by alien ships over a span of decades with no real idea of what they are about is a bit terrifying. Hough explains this all off pretty well and manages a credible ending. Definitely recommended.
