The Doctor and the Dinosaur, a Weird West story from Mike Resnick, offers another romp through an alternative West with Doc Holliday. This time, as well as Ned Buntline and Thomas Edison, he is accompanied by Theodore Roosevelt as they undertake the fight of their lives.

Doc is lying on his death bed when Geronimo offers him another year of life if he persuades paleontologists Cope and Marsh to stop digging on Comanche burial grounds. However, these avid scientists will stop at nothing, even murder to find dinosaur bones. The Comanche medicine men have a surprise for them. If they don't stop, the medicine men will resurrect monsters from the past.

In the novel, as in real history, Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh are dedicated bone hunters. They once worked together and now hate one another. They both wasted fortunes trying to discredit each other. Prior to their expeditions, only three species of dinosaurs were known. They added greatly to our knowledge of this primitive world.

Cope and Marsh are digging for bones in Wyoming and are within a few miles of each other. Unfortunately, some of those bones lie beneath a sacred burial ground. Geronimo fears if the Comanche medicine men resurrect the animals, they might continue to rampage and kill even into Apache territory.

The scientists also employ gunslingers such as Cole Younger and Bill Cody to protect their recovered bones. They also use them sabotage the activities of each other. The reader will discover plenty of excitement once the first dinosaur appears. Resnick provides short biographies of the real people used in his alternative history. He also leaves an opening for more Doc Holliday adventures in the future.
