There are all types of courage. Some are considered more heroic than others, but all types are various forms of facing up to your personal fears and trying to do something about it. Sometimes that means just waking up each day and doing your best to make it to the next one. For others it may mean standing up to do what you believe is right no matter what the personal costs may be.

Maria Martinez has lived her life trying to not be noticed. Each day she works as a maid, and if she doesn’t get noticed by the police or the gangs then that day is a success. She doesn't consider herself brave or a coward, just a person trying to get through her life without trouble.

That was her life until she looked out a window she was washing, in a home in a gated community, and saw a gang break into the house next door. One of the gang members looked up at her window and she felt pinned by his gaze as if she knew him. Another member was a childhood friend she hadn't seen for years.

Connecting again with her childhood friend and her companions changes Maria's attitudes in ways that will change her life, those of her friends, and her community in ways no one could predict.

This is another great story by Charles de Lint that explores how people react to the problems and challenges of the present day. Of course there's a bit of magic thrown in, but even if there were no magic there's plenty to think about in Jack in the Green. The book is also illustrated by Charles Vess which only adds to the story's mood and setting.
