Monster Hunter Nemesis, Book 4 of Larry Correia's Monster Hunter International series provides the history of Agent Franks, the powerful warrior of the Monster Control Bureau. Franks, short for Frankenstein, is an amalgam of the man-made creature and a creature long banished to Hell, but who now fights on the side of good to battle monsters and demons determined to take over the world.

Correia provides his usual quota of violence, mayhem, and weird creatures. Those familiar with the series will welcome this biography of Agent Franks explaining his origins and his contract with the United States Government. Old friends reappear and new threats raise the ante. Readers new to the series will have little trouble following Franks as he continues his path of violence, while changing in unexpected ways.

Franks' cleverness and strength are taxed to the limit as he battles an ancient enemy from Hell bent on destroying him and taking control of humankind. The two are well matched and it appears that for once, Franks may be over-matched.

The variety of monsters grows as Correia invents new ones. Demons from Hell add further complications. Now technology adds a further fiendish touch to the struggle against evil.

The punishment Franks endures while hunted by everyone including former colleagues is incredible and vivid. Only his oath and his forethought enable him to continue his fight against the powers of evil. Some readers will regret the passing of some familiar friends, but new ones add to the story.

Eventually, old religious foes become uneasy allies. Does worse wait just off stage ready to pounce on an unsuspecting world? If Franks fails, who will save the world? The gnomes add a touch of humor to Franks' dealings with other species. Correia keeps raising the stakes.

Dedicated Correia fans will enjoy the battles. The ending leaves plenty of room for the next book. Perhaps it will include the red-haired werewolf Heather Kerkonen, beloved of Earl Harbinger, werewolf and founder of Monster Hunter International.
