Welcome to our August issue of SFRevu. We've got an interesting selection of reviews for you, including Sam Tomaino's reviews of online and print magazines and short fiction.
August Giveaway: This month we have a review of Simon R. Green's Tales of the Hidden World by Drew Bittner. The publisher has offered to allow us to give away a copy of the book. At the end of the month, we will randomly select one of our readers, who has left a comment, to receive a copy of Tales of the Hidden World. NOTE: Our comment rules for SFRevu can basically be boiled down to the comment must be more than "I liked it" or similar. In other words we want to know what you think/feel about the issue/book/story/essay you are commenting on. If commenting, the comment does not need to be positive, but it must be respectful.
Also, this month, we have a convention report by Daniel Dern for Readercon 25, July 10-13, 2014.
Our Convention Calendar: We recently updated our convention calendar with information on all the upcoming conventions that we've been told about. If your favorite genre convention is not listed see the Calendar section of our announcements and follow the directions to let us know about it.
Now for our regular announcements:
While we're happy to have a core of great reviewers for SFRevu, we get more books each month than we've got readers for and we'd like to have more. If you have a great desire to review SF/Fantasy for no pay but the glory of a byline, write to us at editor (at) sfrevu.com telling us a bit about yourself and send a 500 word (or so) review of a book that you have recently read (or a link to a review you have written). We should be able to get back to you within the month. (Please let us know what country you reside in -- the cost of mailing books outside the US/Canada may be an issue.)
We have a monthly news column. If you have a news item or announcement that you think would be of interest to readers of SF, send to: editor (at) sfrevu.com.
We'd like to maintain a convention calendar at our magazine. We've made a start. However, we don't have time to scour the Internet looking for what's happening in the SF/Fantasy arena. Please send us your convention listings. Send to: editor (at) sfrevu.com with the link to the convention website, dates of the convention, where it is held, perhaps a contact person.
Letters to the Editor(s):
We'd like to hear from you ... yes, you. What do you think of our magazine? How could we make it better? Do you like our reviews? Did you have a different opinion than our reviewer? What are your thoughts on the SF and Fantasy and their subgenres? Write to us at editor (at) sfrevu.com.
Publishers Take Note:
Material sent to us will be listed in our books-received column and may also be commented on or reviewed. With few exceptions, material not sent will not be listed or reviewed. Please send materials to SFRevu c/o Gayle Surrette, 16440 Baden Westwood Road, Brandywine, MD 20613.
We're often asked and yes, we do take small press books. Not all books we receive get reviewed but all are listed in our US Books column or UK Books column.
Media People Take Note:
It's rather difficult to review newly released DVDs or other media when we don't get a copy. So, if you'd like us to review something, send material to SFRevu c/o Gayle Surrette, 16440 Baden Westwood Road, Brandywine, MD 20613.
