It's October so Halloween and some pretty great dark fantasy and horror should be coming our way -- along with shorter days and cooler nights. Our issue this month has a good mix of reviews spanning many of the categories included under speculative fiction. Lately, I've been wondering why those who talk about how much they love hard science science fiction seems to read more fantasy. So, I'd like to hear from our readers. Write a short email stating whether you prefer science fiction (any type) or fantasy (any type) and a paragraph about why. We'll draw a winner from those we receive and send them a copy of Exo (Jumper) by Steven Gould if they enjoy SF and The Accidental Highwayman: Being the Tale of Kit Bristol, His Horse Midnight, a Mysterious Princess, and Sundry Magical Persons Besides by Ben Tripp if a fan of fantasy. We'll post the best three on each side in our Letter to the Editor's column. (Of course this all depends on our getting actual emails and not just spam... .

Some of you may have noticed that SFRevu has a Facebook Page. We try to post SF/Fantasy/Horror related information to that page as well as notifications of updates or changes to our eZine. Please like us on Facebook and check that page throughout the month for various SF/Fantasy/Horror related posts.

Our Convention Calendar was updated with the conventions that we'd been notified about over the last month or two. If your favorite convention is not listed, please check our announcement section as to what information we need and how to email and we'll add it to our calendar.

Also, we really do need more reviewers for SFRevu. We have a goodly number of reviewers but health, vacations, job changes, and other issues mean not everyone can review every month so we'd like to add more reviewers. Check out the announcement section below to learn how to apply.

Now for our usual announcements:

Reviewers Wanted:
While we're happy to have a core of great reviewers for SFRevu, we get more books each month than we've got readers for and we'd like to have more. If you have a great desire to review SF/Fantasy for no pay but the glory of a byline, write to us at editor (at) telling us a bit about yourself and send a 500 word (or so) review of a book that you have recently read (or a link to a review you have written). We should be able to get back to you within the month. (Please let us know what country you reside in -- the cost of mailing books outside the US/Canada may be an issue.)

News Column:
We have a monthly news column. If you have a news item or announcement that you think would be of interest to readers of SF, send to: editor (at)

Convention Calendar:
We'd like to maintain a convention calendar at our magazine. We've made a start. However, we don't have time to scour the Internet looking for what's happening in the SF/Fantasy arena. Please send us your convention listings. Send to: editor (at) with the link to the convention website, dates of the convention, where it is held, perhaps a contact person.

Letters to the Editor(s):
We'd like to hear from you ... yes, you. What do you think of our magazine? How could we make it better? Do you like our reviews? Did you have a different opinion than our reviewer? What are your thoughts on the SF and Fantasy and their subgenres? Write to us at editor (at)

Publishers Take Note:
Material sent to us will be listed in our books-received column and may also be commented on or reviewed. With few exceptions, material not sent will not be listed or reviewed. Please send materials to SFRevu c/o Gayle Surrette, 16440 Baden Westwood Road, Brandywine, MD 20613.

We're often asked and yes, we do take small press books. Not all books we receive get reviewed but all are listed in our US Books column or UK Books column.

Media People Take Note:
It's rather difficult to review newly released DVDs or other media when we don't get a copy. So, if you'd like us to review something, send material to SFRevu c/o Gayle Surrette, 16440 Baden Westwood Road, Brandywine, MD 20613.
