Taking place sometime after the events in Dead Beat, War Cry takes up after the start of the war between the Red Court and the wizards' White Council. The council has made Harry Dresden a warden and given him a team of wet behind the ears wizard trainees. Dresden is expected to teach them as he takes them into battle.
Their assignment this time is a bit hinky. They're not supposed to open their orders until they get into the middle of nowhere and, by the way, they have to figure out how to get there on their own. It turns out to be a rescue mission but Ramirez, a member of the team, agrees with Dresden that this doesn't feel right.
Right from the start, the story pulls you in. If you're a fan of the series, you know that Dresden has to live, because he's in books that come after the events of this story -- however, having read the books, you also know that while he may live, that doesn't mean he can't be hurt.
They're all in over their heads. The Red Court wants something that the group Dresden was sent to guard has in their possession. Once Dresden and his team find out what it is, they know that someone on the council is not playing by the rules. Nevertheless, they have a job to do and they're determined to do it 'til their last breath.
The artwork is stunning. Realistic, or as realistic as red court vampires and other monsters can be in fantasy. Once you get into the story it is more like watching a movie unfold then reading a book.
An excellent addition to the Dresden universe.
