Virtual Arcana: The Fool is the first of what will be a series of releases telling the story of Kelsey Zellar and, I assume, her sister, Keekee. They've recently moved and the story opens on the first day at their new school in a new city.

Since this is the first release in the serial, it is the book that sets up the world, the characters, and kicks off the problems that will drive the story. This is an alternate world. The country they live in is very repressive. Everyone wears a bracelet that continually monitors their behavior, including the foods they eat and their emotional state. Many behaviors that would seem normal to us are forbidden to them. In fact, they have moved several times because Keekee plays virtual games which is against the law. If she's caught again, she'll be brain wiped and reprogrammed as an enforcer. This immediately adds tension to the story.

Kelsey is very different from her sister and follows the rules. She sees it as her job to make sure her sister is on the straight and narrow so that they can graduate and apply to immigrate to some other country for college. Once you leave you can never come back again, so Kelsey wants to make sure that Keekee can come with her.

The kick to start us off is that when stopping for coffee before school, Kelsey runs into a very intriguing (and good looking boy) at the coffee shop. He seems mysterious and maybe a bit dangerous -- but, he enjoys books. He gives her a card with The Fool on it. He also tells her to keep it secret.

This segment was interesting, a bit surrealistic, but held my interest. I'd guess that the story will take us through most of the Tarot's Major Arcana. This segment is subtitled The Fool which is sometimes interpreted as representing the naive person unwittingly walking into danger. Perhaps that is exactly what Kelsey is doing, or perhaps it is the reader who is being lead into an adventure.

The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, and The Hierophant have already been released on Amazon.
