Mostly known as a respected and capable editor of dark fiction anthologies ( e.g.the Fantasy Tales and Dark Terrors series) David A Sutton is actually a prolific, fine author himself, his stories, ranging from fantasy to SF, from horror to supernatural, having appeared over the years in countless genre magazines and books. Following his overdue, excellent first collection Clinically Dead and Other Tales of the Supernatural, Sutton's new collection Dead Water and Other Weird Tales assembles eighteen stories, mostly reprints, providing a good showcase of Sutton's versatile talent as a writer.

I will simply focus on the stories which, in my opinion, are the more accomplished.

"Zulu's War" is a brilliant tale, very effectively blending the horrors of war with those of vengeance from beyond the grave.

"Corruption" is a vividly dark piece where a murderer finally gets his terrible punishment from a superior justice.

In the excellent "Pot de Téte", we face the dark powers of voodoo loose in the Dominican Republic during the mid-19th century.

In the frightening title story "Dead Water" a bird watching expedition turns into a living nightmare with a grim ending.

To me the best tale in the volume is the enticing "The Pre-Raphaelite Picture", portraying a femme fatale returning from a long-gone past to helplessly haunt an unfortunate man.

The remaining stories are well worth reading, making this collection a must for any dark fiction lover.
