Space traveling salvagers fighting to overthrow an oppressive regime and protect humanity from evil aliens is the theme of Inherit the Stars by Tony Peak. When Kivita Vindir undertakes a mission to retrieve the Juxj Star, supposedly an artifact left by the Vim, an ancient race, or God, little does she expect to find an old lover and learn her real heritage. Her life is at stake along with the fate of humans when age-old enemies demand the Juxj Star.
Heroine of an old fashioned space opera intertwined with a re-kindled romance, Kivita learns her past is not what she thought. Her heritage brings new abilities and new perils as others seek the long-lost Vim.
Most humans are ruled by a religious group, the Prophets that restricts access to technology and uses it to exploit others. Their leader, the Rector, hires Kivita to retrieve the Juxj Star in hopes it will reveal more Vim technology and lead to the surviving Vim. Another group, the alien Sarrhdtuu, hate humans and seek to use humans as slaves and destroy human colonies. They too want the Vim with the aim of destroying them.
Kivita's sudden gain of new knowledge and access to unknown and unexpected abilities changes the balance of power. She has always steered clear of rebel groups, but as events evolve she is forced to join them. They alone have the means to help her explore her new abilities.
The Prophets have no intention letting Kivita and the Star escape them. They want access to the path to the Vim and ally themselves with the Sarrhdtuu, not realizing the aliens would destroy the Prophets along with other humans.
As enemies pursue Kivata, they also attack the rebels. Now Kivita must elude her pursuers and unlock the secrets of her heritage and of the Star to save human colonies. Time is short as the enemies pursue the destruction of the rebels and her capture. As Kivita and Sar, her once lover, move from battle to battle, they discover few can be trusted. Spies are everywhere.
Tony Peak provides an exciting adventure in his debut novel resembling an homage to Star Wars and the space operas of the past. He is the author of a number of short stories in such areas as fantasy, horror, and science fiction.
