In a stratified society where only those of noble birth are allowed to become mystics, a furor arises when a young girl of low birth is summoned by the current High Mystic to appear for the trials to become her apprentice. Her family and most of her friends tell Pomella that the trials are beyond her abilities.
Lady Elona, daughter of the local baron, is horrified and decrees Pomella cannot accept or she will become Unclaimed, to be shunned by all, and banished from the barony. Even her father tells her she must stay.
Determined to answer the summons, Pomella sneaks away to meet the guide at the appointed site. She takes with her grandmother's Book of Songs.
After a series of misadventures, Pomella eventual links up with a guide and reaches the place of the High Mystic. There she encounters three other applicants all from the nobility. The High Mystic sets a series of tests after which she will select her new apprentice.
Denzel has created a lovely young adult fantasy with a world beset by enemies that only the Mystics can defeat. Pomella has determination, yet does not know her own strength. She makes some wrong choices but learns from them and she has loyal friends.
It's unclear why Denzel has chosen to use names for relatives that are close to those ordinarily used. Initially, it may distract the reader from the story. Two sequels are forthcoming: Mystic Dragon (2018) and a, as yet unnamed, Mystic 3.
