Number 81 of Apex Magazine has new stories by Benjanun Sriduangkaew, Daniel Rosen, and Betsy Phillips, a reprinted story by by Nick Mamatas, as well as interviews, poetry, and a book excerpt.

Here we have the 81st issue of Apex Magazine, with 3 new stories, 1 reprint, and other features.

The new fiction begins with "The Beast at the End of Time" by Benjanun Sriduangkaew. -+- Nabaat awakens after a long hibernation to find a world not as she had designed it to be. The fabricators she had made had gone awry, She tells one of the survivors that she can stop who is behind the problem. They go to where this person is. Nice twist. Interesting story.

"Anabaptist" by Daniel Rosen -+- In some sort of Amish community, Ephraim leaves home to seek his brother Jakob who wanted to know why the sun didn't rise. Bishop Yoder just said it was "God's Will." Ephraim learns much in his journey and we learn what his world really is. Very good.

"The Four Gardens of Fate" by Betsy Phillips -+- Kayla, like other members of her family, can see the future. Her grandmother was not able use her talent to win the lottery. Other members of her family had problems, too. Kayla faces a challenge of her own. Nicely done!

There is also a reprinted story, "On the Occasion of My Retirement" by Nick Mamatas. I do not review reprinted stories unless they are from the current year.

Apex Magazine works in a unique way. If you are a subscriber, you get your issue when it's published. Otherwise, you wait a month. They are worth supporting, so check them out at their website (see link at the top of this page).
