Bay of Sighs is the second book of the Guardians Trilogy by Nora Roberts and begins almost immediately after the first book, Stars of Fortune. The Guardians--Annika, Bran, Doyle, Riley, Sasha, and Sawyer--have to find the three stars that have fallen to earth. There's one of fire, one of ice, and one of water. So far they've found one and hidden it until they collect all three.
This time they've landed on Capri and they believe they should be looking for the one of water. They are still recovering from their injuries, researching possible sites where they might find water, and continuing to learn more about each other and their powers. Since Annika is a mermaid who has been granted legs for this mission, they expect that she will be the key to retrieving the star.
When they found fire, the battle against Nerezza, the mother of lies, took all of their skill and a lot of luck. They know she'll be coming for them, that she's been hurt, and that she will not underestimate them again. So, they are training to fight and survive as they seek the star.
The characters are well developed with a backstory that is rich in detail and dribbled out to the reader in remembrances. It's the background of the characters that adds texture to the story. They have fears, desires, hopes, and dreams, as well as the courage to take on a task that they know if they fail will mean the end of life on earth as it exists now.
Of course there's also a lot of interpersonal angst as the six guardians interact, share tasks, and learn to trust each other. Two of the guardians have become a couple. Danger and the closeness develop between all six guardians, making for some interesting interactions that add complications when on such a high risk and dangerous mission.
Bay of Sighs is well plotted and keeps the pages turning as you try to learn what will happen next and hoping that they will succeed. The next book in the series will determine the ultimate fate of the three stars, and the guardians who seek to find them. You don't have to read the first book to enjoy this one, but you probably will want to after finishing this book, in order to understand how they became involved in this quest. I haven't yet read Stars of Fortune, and had no problem diving into Bay of Sighs.
