Here we have the 96th issue of Apex Magazine, with three new stories, one reprint, and other features.
The new fiction begins with "How Lovely Is the Silence of Growing Things" by Evan Dicken. -+- Kate reconnects with her estranged daughter, Mel, in a world of menacing poets and greenlight which causes plants to grow on human skin. No explanation as to how this world came to be other than "the sun hatched". Story just does not come together for me.
The second new story is "The Three-Tongued Mummy" by E. Catherine Tobler. -+- A man named Jackson buys a mummy to display in his circus and names it Nefertiti. But he is no cheap showman and the mummy is not a lifeless husk. The mummy has powers and can take people places for a coin. but they (the pronoun used) have intentions of their own and plans for vengeance. Truly imaginative and completely fascinating tale.
The third new story is "Hiraeth: Tragedy in Four Acts" by Karen Lord. -+- This is the story of Janik, who needed cyborg eyes when he was young, It's also the story of hiraeth a condition developed from living somewhere other than Earth. Janik's early augmentation makes him different. But is that better. OK.
