The story takes place about a year after the events of the Serenity movie. Mal is having problems getting enough jobs of the kind that they can do and still remain under the notice of the Alliance. He's finding it hard to earn enough to keep the ship fueled and the crew fed, let alone paid.
Inara gets a call from Iris, who tell her that Bea is missing and she needs their help to find her. Bea was meeting a contact on the planet Burnet. Bea had gotten into the resistance after the world found out what happened on Miranda. Iris was worried. So the Mal and crew head to Burnet.
Nothing is easy so it's no surprise that the resistance has a splinter group called the Peacemakers who are not so careful about what they destroy or whether or not innocents are hurt or killed in the process. What they don't know is which group Bea was involved with and what she was doing. In the process of searching for Bea, the crew finds out that there's more going on than they first thought. It seems there are secrets within secrets and just before the end of the book, we (readers) and the crew learn some inconvenient and unsettling secrets that are going to change the dynamics of the people we've come to care about.
Hopefully, the next volume will fill in more of the story and carry us along on this adventure.
The artwork works well with the story and the lettering is easy to read. Each character is identifiable which I always find to be a big plus so I don't have to guess who is doing what on a crowded action page. The art and story flow together seamlessly. Though at one point it seemed to drag as two characters moved through the city just a beat or two too long and should have triggered an indication of a trap for a savvy character – or maybe that was just meta to this reader.
All in all, a great addition to the story for fans of Firefly or Serenity.
