The 131st issue of Clarkesworld is here with five new stories, two reprints and other features.
The first story is "Twisted Knots" by D.A. Xiaolin Spires. -+- Lilian works making artificial steak, using her artistic talent. She studies topological forms. She has become interested in creating a golem. This is related to her mother, who had abandoned her when she was a teenager, used to create who created lifelike puppets. This all comes to together in an unusual way.
The second story is "Reversion" by Nin Harris. -+- Aakriti has returned to her family after living as Aakavi on the planet Tortz and mingling her DNA with a tentacle Tortzian named Vazakh to produce a daughter. But a change in the government of the Galactic Union considered such unions an abomination and she was forcibly separated from her husband and daughter. Now, the matriarch of her family insists that she revert to being Aakriti. But can she? Does she want to? Interesting look at the clash of cultures.
The third is "The Stone Weta" by Octavia Cade. -+- The Stone Weta in the Rock and Pillar mountain range, Resurrection on the southern border of the Chihuahuan desert, the Glass Sponge from seabeds beneath the Antarctic ice, the Sand Cat from Timbuktu in Mali, the Fish-scale Gecko from Madagascar, the Japanese Seastar, the Fish-eating Spider from Tuvalu, the Gympie Gympie (a plant) from Australia, the Antarctic Lichen: Women are taking on these aspects to preserve the environment from disaster. Lyrical and beautiful.
The fourth story is "In the Blind" by Sunny Moraine. -+- Nicole and Marlie are orbiting Earth when all the lights go out and communication ceases. They do not take it well. Was not able to care about these two people.
The fifth story is "A Man Out of Fashion" by Chen Qiufan (translated by Ken Liu). -+- Du Ruofei was 24 years old in 2018 and had not had a great life. A botched flu vaccination had left him without control of his facial nerves. He couldn't smile properly. But he had won the lottery to be placed in hibernation for 300 years and wake up in the future. The other "hibernauts" were all famous people. He awakes to what seems a future, utopian world and is given a mate who calls herself Jingjing. His life becomes a reality show. The world is run by an elite group but there are rebels who want to return to a natural past. He eventually finds things are not as simple as that. Another good story.
There are also two reprinted stories, I do not review reprinted stories but I hope you enjoy them.
The stories in Clarkesworld are always available, you can check them out at their website (see link at the top of this review).
