Tor and its associated imprints have been "on the Internet" for years. As far back as the 1980s, Tor employees hosted discussions of their publishing program at online venues like GEnie and CompuServe. The original Tor site began life as a Gopher server--a kind of web site before the Web. It migrated to the web proper in 1993, hand-coded by editorial staffers in their spare time. In the years since, like everyone else, Tor staffers have learned to use the web to communicate in more sophisticated ways--but the "hand-rolled" core of the site at www.tor.com had remained much the same, gently aging in place, an artifact of the internet's Eocene. Now, at last, Tor is closing the circle, with a fully modern site that will serve as the core of many initiatives to come.
