Bodice-ripping meets the frozen tundra in this perky, near-future post-apocalyptic romance novel. It's every woman's fantasy: be a little better looking, a little faster, a little smarter, and a lot sexier than anyone else on the planet. Of course, you are also a trained killer. That's a good start. Then be universally abused by every human being on the planet you have post-puberty contact with, add a gorgeous guy with superhuman strengths, who has no emotions, and speaks without using contractions. Stir well with a monstrously-evil villain equipped with an army of henchman, action scenes, and melt-down sex, and the female reader finds an easy read, tough to put down during the bedroom scenes and just intriguing enough to pick back up after the inevitable interruptions of daily life.

The reader will wonder whether the artic setting was inspired by the History Channel's docudrama Ice Road Truckers, but the author is Canadian so that program may or may not be a source of inspiration. Nonetheless, there are little slips in treatment of artic cold. Our heroine runs a number of laps in frigid temperatures. When the temperatures are artic cold, you freeze your lungs if you don't breathe through your nose whenever you are outside. The hostile arctic environment is generally handled consistently, adding another edge to the plot that unfolds like a jack-in-the-box.

The backdrop to the novel is a near-future after a vaguely-referenced plague has decimated the human population. The huddling hypothermic masses in the artic regions may escape to the sunny south if enough resources can be gathered. The novel would benefit from greater depth of description of how the society functions, but that said…..Driven would make a great movie.
