With the flood of vampire books released each year, it's not surprising that so many sink into the waters. The Accidental Vampire, however, rises above the flood to entertain with humor, a mystery, and great characters. I'd never read Lynsay Sands before, though her work keeps popping up in those "you also might like" lists. Her vampires have some interesting twists to their nature and history. But the story is one of discovery and love -- true love, friendship, community, and trust.

After Elvi's husband and child were killed in a car accident, she was despondent. Finally, Mabel and the townspeople convinced her to take a vacation in Mexico. There Mabel and Elvi were in an accident, the tour bus rolled down the side of a mountain. Mabel had cuts and bruises but Elvi became a vampire. Not knowing what to do, she and Mabel watched vampire movies to find out how she should live her new life. Everything probably would have gone well but as Mabel and Elvi's other friends grew old and died, Mabel decided to find a vampire mate for Elvi so she wouldn't be alone. This brought the attention of the Council and Victor Argeneau, enforcer for the Council, was sent to check out the situation.

Victor arrives in town to find he's one of six contestants for Elvi's attention. He also learns that the entire town knows Elvi is a vampire, she's bitten humans, and she's totally enchanting and aggravating. With this set up you can imagine the comedy of Elvi learning there are others of her kind and well, to be blunt -- movies are not a great way to learn how to survive as a vampire.

The characters are fully formed individuals. The story line is amusing and interesting and when the attempts on the lives of the vampires begin -- it becomes a true page turner.

I'm looking forward to the upcoming books from this author: Vampires are Forever (due in Feb) and Vampire Interrupted (due in March).
