With Rachel Morgan nothing is easy. Since we last met her in For a Few Demons More, Rachel has found some peace for herself. She and Ivy have developed a more comfortable relationship and are working on dealing with the blood/love issue. Rachel's been spending more time with her mother. In fact, she's attacked by Al the demon while out shopping with her mother. Since Al is supposed to be in demon prison, this does not bode well. Someone is summoning Al and setting him loose to attack Rachel. Could things get worse? Well, this is Rachel Morgan's life, so yes, they can.

From the shopping trip with her mother and the attack by Al to the final page, the action may slow a bit but only to give the reader a bit of a breather and a bathroom break. Tension ramps up and stays that way throughout. Rachel is being watched since she's already tainted by the demon smut in her aura from having done the dark spells required to save herself and her loved ones over the last several books. She's living her life in a goldfish bowl and she doesn't like it, especially when someone keeps dropping in sharks.

I've enjoyed this series since the first book and it still entertains and keeps me interested. Many other writers keep bumping up the protagonist's powers and then bringing in more powerful enemies. Harrison, on the other hand, simply continues to write darn good stories dealing with the moral choices that we all must face, though not to this degree. What would you do to keep your loved ones safe? Most of us have given some thought to that question; thankfully most of us will never be faced with the actual need to follow through. Rachel, on the other hand, has had to face it with differing degrees of success throughout the series. Yet each time she faces the situation, she manages to remain consistent to her self and her beliefs, though her answers sometimes change.

Once again there's plenty of action, frustration, tenderness, comedy, and the strong sense of community among Rachel and her friends and family. It was fun to visit the Hollows again and I'm really glad I don't live there or in that world -- but I'm grateful for the time I spend with Rachel Morgan.
