Pierdomenico Baccalario's third Ulysses Moore middle-grade novel begins in the middle of the action. Taking up from where the last novel ended, the Covenant twins Julia and Jason and their friend Rick Banner strive to unravel the mystery of Kilmore Cove. The town has no sign and no maps list it.

The three must battle Oblivia Newton and her hulking henchman Manfred in the search for the doors to time and their keys. Rich, beautiful, and ruthless, Oblivia will stop at nothing to gain control of the mysterious world behind the doors. Having gained an old map made by Thomas Bowden, she knows the locations of the doors, but possesses only two keys. Julia holds four. They learn a master key exists, but have no idea where to find it.

Nestor, the caretaker of Argo Manor, knows more than he reveals, but who provides the mysterious clues? Julia is convinced Ulysses Moore, former owner of Argo Manor and protector of the doors, leaves them. Both Ulysses and Penelope, his wife, are supposedly dead.

Tracking Oblivia, the three youngsters follow her and Manfred to the House of Mirrors built by the watchmaker Peter Dedalus. Oblivia seeks one of the doors hidden in the house and orders her demolition crew to destroy the house. They are reluctant to tear down the finely engineered house.

Meanwhile Nestor, with the help of the lighthouse keeper, seeks the key lost in the previous book, The Long Lost Map, but without success. The lighthouse keeper predicts failure.

The youngsters pursue each puzzling clue to resolve the mystery of Kilmore Cove and to protect the strange world to which the doors provide access. Readers may look forward to more books in the series, the next scheduled for April, The Isle of Masks.
