M.H. Bonham has created an imaginative world based on n amalgam of Celtic and Norse mythology. The God of Death vies for supremacy and takes human form to sow discord and fuel wars. The struggle of good versus evil pits Lachlei, the widowed queen of the Lochvaur, against the God of Death. Her blood oath to avenge the murder of her husband demands self-sacrifice. She must win no matter what the cost.
Demons and gods vie for control in a classic struggle of good versus evil. Areyn, God of Death, and his demons scheme to conquer Lachlei's world in his quest to control the universe. First, he destroys Fialan, Lachlei's husband. Only she stands in his way. He mobilizes her enemies against her.
Ni'yah, god of mischief warns his bother Rhyn'athel, god of warriors, that Areyn has broken the truce and seeks to control the world of Lachlei. He urges his brother to intervene. Reluctant at first, Rhyn'athel finds Lachlei's beauty a lure. He knows alone she cannot win against Areyn.
Battles, slaughter, and the classic struggle of evil seeking control propel the story forward. The dead have parts yet to play. Areyn's demons and his human allies work to defeat Lachlei, but unexpected allies come to her aid.
The plethora of names and warriors becomes dizzying at times. Fortunately, Bonham includes a list of people, places, and things.
An expert in canine training and behavior, Bonham has numerous articles and close to twenty books on those topics. It would be interesting to see her apply that knowledge to her fantasy world.
Other fantasy novels that share the same world include Sword of Prophecy and Runestones of Telwas. However, Bonham's pedestrian writing mars an otherwise good read.
