From Dead to Worse (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 8)
by Charlaine HarrisCover Artist: Lisa Desimini Review by Gayle Surrette Ace Hardcover ISBN/ITEM#: 9780441015894 Date: 06 May 2008 List Price $24.95 Amazon US / Amazon UK / Show Official Info / Sookie is trying to put all the events All Together Dead behind her. But Quinn has disappeared with no word. Her brother and his wife seem to be having some problems. The anti-vampire element is gaining strength post-Katrina as the vampires of southern Louisiana struggle to recover from the storm and the bombing. Other than a bit of depression, Sookie's doing okay -- even having someone sharing her house isn't so bad. But isn't that always when things fall apart?
The best part of a new book in the Sookie Stackhouse series is getting to spend time with the characters and as a bonus you get to also experience the equivalent of a ultra twisty roller coaster ride. Nothing is every simple in Sookie's life. Even when it seems that it's a straight forward task, it has unforeseen repercussions. Even having stood up at her brothers wedding, manages to come back to haunt her. Old enemies and old friends turn up with frequent regularity to rattle Sookie's calm. Since no one can live in isolation and Sookie has little family, she holds dear those who she has come to think of as family or friend. This is a book of friendship and family, betrayal and forgiveness. Sookie has changed a lot since Dead Until Dark but at her core she is still the same woman we met in the pages of the first book. However, she now has learned to live with the decisions she's made over the years. Sookie is a realist and she does what she has to do to protect those she cares about, but she refuses to be used -- though I think she often has a blind spot for the people close to her. This is also a post-Katrina Louisiana. While Louisiana, in our reality, is having its problems getting back on its feet after the storm, the Louisiana in this universe has the added problems of vampire politics and power struggles as well as the disruption to the were groups in the area. New leaders rise and fall in the aftermath of any disaster and it's no different here. What those changes and new alliances will mean for Sookie and her friends is still to be played out. So Sookie is set in motion and we get to follow in her wake as she deals with family, friends, allies, ex-lovers, and enemies in this new action packed addition to the series.
