You'd think Joanne Baldwin, Weather Warden, had earned some down time after her near-constant struggle to save the world, right?
You'd be wrong.
Joanne is on the cusp of a marriage proposal in Florida when an earthquake tears apart Florida. Worse yet, her Djinn lover David cannot perceive its cause--something that ought to be impossible.
In Gale Force, Rachel Caine jumps the reader into the middle of another epic battle, pitting Joanne Baldwin (endowed with the power to control weather) against supernatural evil unlike any she's seen before.
Ordinarily, she'd be able to count on David, her lover, fiancé and ages-old Djinn, to help figure out the problem. But this time, David is unable to see what Joanne does--which makes him powerless to help. Considering Joanne saw a dead Djinn at the heart of the problem, they have a considerable difference of opinion to bridge.
As a bad situation escalates to crisis proportions, Joanne has to call upon all her resources--friendly and not-so-friendly--if she wants to save the world one more time. Problem is, it may not be enough...
Rachel Caine delivers another powerhouse urban fantasy with this novel. Joanne Baldwin has gone through the wringer more than once, surviving where the odds seemed impossible. In some series, that kind of threat escalation would become melodramatic or even absurd, but Caine keeps it grounded with enjoyable characters, a realistic appraisal of the dangers (and the price exacted by the solutions), and above all, a strong bond of love between the main characters.
Joanne and David have earned their happiness, but factions on both sides cannot let matters rest--some problems stirred up in previous novels begin to pay off in unexpected ways, paving the way for a really huge climax. To say more might be to get into spoiler country, so it's best to leave off there.
Fans of dynamic, fast-paced action, strong on magic and characterization, will enjoy this new installment of Joanne Baldwin's adventures.
