My Rotten Life: Nathan Abercrombie, Accidental Zombie by David Lubar is another look at modern day school systems. Nathan Abercrombie, fifth grader, is a second bester and sits at the second bester table. You know how the cafeteria tables go. The second besters are the second fattest, the second tallest, or in Nathan's case the second skinniest. Everything goes wrong with Nathan when his heart is pulled out of his chest, tossed to the floor and squished under the heel of the girl he has a crush on. Abigail, from the losers table, offers to help him--her uncle has invented pain-be-gone and is looking for subjects. But something goes horrible wrong (see the title). Is life as a zombie going to be worse than his painful loser existence?
Lubar has a way of starting his stories off with the seemingly mundane daily horror that is public schooling and then twisting it. Nathan makes a choice to stop feeling the pain of rejection and disappointment and now he has to live, sort of, with the consequences. Abigail thinks she can fix things but she needs help getting the ingredients for the cure.
Through the various adventures to gather the ingredients, Nathan, Abigail, and Rodney (Nathan's best friend since forever), find that you can find friends in the most unlikely places. These are kids dealing with some big concepts as their lives are turned upside down.
You just might find Nathan's efforts to learn the limits of zombie life funny but what if it was you? How would you cope? There's some hilarious scenes as Nathan tries to keep his condition a secret from his family and teachers.
This one was lots of fun with some serious moments.
