Doranna Durgin begins a new urban fantasy series with The Reckoners featuring feisty heroine and ghost hunter Lisa McGarrity known to her friends as Garrie. At age ten she learned of her talent to corral and manage ghosts. Rhonda Rose, a ghost, helped her to understand and develop her abilities. Now she heads a team of three: the empath Lucia, Drew who can sense the history of a place, and Quinn who ferrets out data they need.
Ghosts are capable of leaving physical residue called smelly ghost goop, but the team lacks the ability to ferret out the source of ghosts in a new adobe in Albuquerque when Trevarr, a handsome hunk, interrupts them. He approaches Garrie and her team to help him take action against the ghosts in the Winchester House in San Jose. Suspicious of his motives, she at first refuses his request. Distrustful of him, but fascinated with the challenge of the legendary house, she finally agrees. However, Quinn refuses to accompany them.
Their first visit to the Winchester House traps them in a room of ghosts and an all-out assault by the ghosts on her. The furious ghosts fear something and want Garrie to remove the menace, but provide no information on what they fear or who. She has never found herself so embattled and fears for her friends, herself, and the two families accompanying them on a tour of the house. Eventually they escape, but the team and Garrie are shaken.
Learning about the ghosts' problem becomes more complicated when strange events and manifestations take place. When she comes under attack by a hulking man, Trevarr intervenes, but suffers major injuries. He convinces her that the entire world is at stake. Garrie fights her attraction to Trevarr. His unwillingness to tell her what they face infuriates her. Gradually she learns to read his expressions and his odd pewter eyes, but more surprises await placing the survival of all at stake. They face so much more than angry ghosts.
Durgin takes the reader on a wild ride with plenty of twists and turns. The most interesting character is Sklayne, Trevarr's pseudo-cat, but with strange abilities that Garrie gradually comes to know. Sklayne feeds on energy and loves nothing better than to draw it from power outlets and to travel via power lines. He possesses an unbound curiosity that gets him into trouble.
Be sure to look for more adventures featuring Garrie and her friends. Durgin has a sequel under consideration tentatively title Storm of Reckoning.
