The 39 Clues Book 6: In Too Deep
by Jude WatsonReview by Gayle Surrette Scholastic Hardcover ISBN/ITEM#: 9780545060462 Date: 01 November 2009 List Price $12.99 Amazon US / Amazon UK / Show Official Info / From the minute Amy and Dan Cahill and their au pair Nellie Gomez land in Australia, they're in too deep. Things are heating up and Ian and Natalie's mother is taking over, and she doesn't play nice at all. Also, Amy is hiding information from Dan under the belief that she's protecting him. Or is she protecting herself? But can he really be safe if he doesn't know all the facts?
Landing in Australia, Amy and Dan only know that their parents came to Sydney years ago to look for the clues. They contact a friend of their parents, Shep Trent, hoping he'll have information on where their parents went. This is a book of revelations. Amy must remember what she knows about the night her parents died. She must tell Dan the whole truth. They also must learn to trust each other again. The search to find the clues is taking a toll on everyone. Amy and Dan, as young as they are, are coming to understand that they don't want to be like the other Cahill branches of the family. They don't even know what branch they belong to. But, they do know that if after gathering all the clues, you become supremely powerful, that the other seekers should not be allowed to wield such power. Amy and Dan travel around Australia and the South Pacific following in their parents footsteps. Along the way they learn that Mark Twain visited Australia back in 1896 and a strange man accosted him and was tried for attempted assassination. The game is afoot again as they must puzzle out the connections between the various bits of information that they gather and where it will lead them next. The series seems to meander, but each book brings Amy and Dan and the readers closer to discovering all the clues. Watson is my favorite author so far in this series. Amy and Dan, when written by Jude Watson, seem to come alive on the page as living, breathing young people trying to manage to survive in this very dangerous game. We'll learn more about their quest in book 7, The Viper's Nest.
